Default hold up pedal to make ge compactor work

The only way to get the compactor to work is hold the pedal up until it has compelted its cycle you have to guess or listen when to stop the second you stop lifting the pedal it stops. Do these compactors have a switch that can go bad that would cause this???
Thanks Jim
