Clothes Dryer problem

Model Number: 5 cycle 3 Temp, Lg. cap. H/D Brand: Whirlpool Appliance Age: 1 – 5 years

I have checked to see that machine is on proper cycle, lint filter is clean, load the dryer, hit the start button, timer starts, machine tumbles properly for 30-60 seconds and then stops. I have noticed a smokey smell when I open the door. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
